Im convinced its because she has Jamaican ancestry and Im from Jamaica.
Thats an important part of Maddie.
And the way she did that was to bring the world inside.
But you need that in the film.One of my biggest worries washoware we going to do that.
Watching someone bang out a book review is not exciting on film.
So how do they solve that problem?
[Laughs] I dont know if Im allowed to say!
But Stella really figured it out.
There are parts of the movie where I was like, Oh.
Thats a better way to do that.
I wish Id thought of that.
Its weird to critique your own work through someone elses lens.
Her imagination gets writ large on the screen.
Nothing that couldnt possibly happen in the world happens.
But her imagination gets splashed up there.
Tell me about the casting of Amandla Stenberg as Maddie and Nick Robinson as Olly.
She has a real strength, but shes really optimistic and positive.
Thats something Maddie is.
Amandla also has an innocence about her, which Maddie does, too.
I sort of understand her.
And Anika Noni Rose really pulls that off.
Shes really a second mom, but a friend, too.
[Carla] is basically a softy, in the way we all are as parents.
And Carla, is sort of helpless against Maddie.
I think she just started, so were going down the road.
And youre working on a new book?I am.
[Laughs] I dont want to get killed by my editor.
