25 world premieres announced thus far, including ‘The Current War,’ ‘I, Tonya,’ ‘Breathe,’ ‘Stronger’
The 2017 Toronto International Film Festival has unveiled its first round of programming for its upcoming 42nd edition.
TIFF artistic director Cameron Bailey and CEO Piers Handling announced the first round of films screening in the Galas and Special Presentations sections, including 25 world premieres among 47 films announced thus far.
Among the lineup are new films from Angelina Jolie, who makes her fourth major directorial bow withFirst They Killed My Father,Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofskys collaborative thrillermother!, Emma Stone and Steve Carells sports biopicBattle of the Sexes, Margot Robbies Tonya Harding dramaI, Tonya, Benedict Cumberbatchs Thomas Edison/George Westinghouse historical pictureThe Current War, Andy SerkisBreathe, Martin McDonaghsThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,Guillermo del TorosThe Shape of Water, George ClooneysSuburbicon, Boston Marathon bombing dramaStronger, and Alexander PaynesDownsizing, which was previously announced as part of the 2017 Venice International Film Festival.

Other films showing include early-year festival favorites, including CannesBPM(Beats Per Minute),Luca Guadagninos Sundance dramaCall Me By Your Name, starring Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer, and Dee ReesMudbound, which also bowed at Sundance in January.
Alongside fellow festivals in Telluride, New York, and Venice, TIFF has established itself as an essential cog in the four-armed fall festival Oscar machine, with its prestigious Peoples Choice Award signaling either a Best Picture win or nomination for eight of its last 10 winners since 2007.
