ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So lets start right at the end.
What happened?STEVEN KNIGHT:Well, Im not going to say a lot.
But I would say, expect the unexpected, always with this series.
Was it always the plan to kill Winter?
Thats the problem; I cant really say much without giving things away.
Of course withTaboo, the line between life and death is blurred.
Now, Winter wasnt the only person to presumably die.
Having finally been pushed to the edge, Zilpha kills her husband.
As a result of last weeks exorcism, theres definitely something different about her.
Whats happening to her?Its one of those things where the audience must have their own interpretation.
Not always, but often.
When she first goes to Delaney after killing Geary, shes excited to see him and be with him.
Where he has quite a different reaction, almost one of surprise.
And he has changed quite a bit since he first arrived back.
He wanted her to be different.
He didnt want her to be guilty and to know what its like to do that sort of thing.
Now, she does, so hes not pleased with himself.
His version of a happy ending might be that he doesnt think he deserves a happy ending.
This was a very punishing time for everyone men and women but particularly for women.
So it was never going to be an easy ride.
When James ship is blown up, hes genuinely shocked.
With everything that has been going on, did he truly feel untouchable?
Therefore, hes almost invulnerable; nothing anyone can do can adjust his behavior because hes prepared to die.
His strength comes from knowing that at any minute he could die and he doesnt care.
Ive found it very interesting how youve spaced out the introduction of the various important characters.
It wasnt, Heres the premiere and every character you will need to know.
It would be ludicrous, no one would even entertain that.
The story and action have really ramped up the last few episodes.
So at the beginning, I think establishing certain things quite relatively gently is important.
Theres going to be a sort of brutal simplicity, which isnt simple at all, its quite sophisticated.
When he chooses to divulge, when he chooses to talk, it can be in an odd way.
Through the whole thing, Ive tried to use dialogue in a more heightened way.
Its more as if you were hearing people sing instead of hearing them talk.
So Im trying to develop a way of doing dialogue.
Everyone tries to do naturalistic dialogue these days since about 1965.
Its meant to be how people really talk, but it isnt.
A lot of unexpected things will happen and a lot of things that people have predicted wont happen.
But this is the story of misfits and America.
