Dont call itSerialseason 3, or even a true-crime podcast for that matter.
Those unforeseen jolts are part of what makesS-Towna bingeworthy listen, and what producers hope potentialSerialconverts will enjoy.
You released all seven episodes, Netflix-style.

Was there a reason behind that?It wasnt strategic, it was more editorial.
We went back and forth on it for a while.
It felt like a novel and we had talked about that a lot.

You dont have to wait a week to read a novel.
In that way, it made more sense to me: Why not do it all at once?
And that to us seemed a lot more freeing in the way we could tell the story.
WhenS-Townwasfirst announced, many people kept calling it the next season ofSerial. Its not!
Even withSerial, whatsSerial?
Basically,Serialis one serialized story told over chapters.
Other than that we dont have really a definition for it.
That was the same thing forS-Town.Im not interested in doing the same kinds of stories over and over again.
I dont think anyone would be interested in doing that.
It is also really boring.
No one wants to see Steven Spielberg just makeE.T.over and over again.
You want to keep on pushing it and trying new things and experiments.
As long as weve kind of got some money to be able to do that, were good.
What was behind your decision to not makeS-Townthe third season ofSerial? We had talked about that.
Its not Sarah [Koenig], and Sarahs still working on season 3 right now.
Because its not Sarah, it seemed like this is its own thing.
And who wants to do that?
says executive producer Julie Snyder.
We wouldve been able to charge more for ads and get more advertisers.
If thats really the only reason why were doing it then, lets not do that.
And for me for the last four months, Im present-ish.
Ive really been onS-Townand Sarah has been doing edits onS-Townand her time has been divided.
Shes been really great on it but that means shes had to pause her work on herSerialreporting.
I guess theres not much for me to say about it right now.
I dont even know what to say.
Come on, how about one hint?It doesnt have a genre.
I dont know what genreThis American Lifewould even be.
The last thing we want to do is feel like were working in a genre.
What I can say is that I had initially thought thatSerialseason 3 would be out this summer.
I can guarantee you that is not …well, geez…
I think I can guarantee you that thats not the case.
Im pretty sure I can guarantee that but actually dont hold me totally to it.
