Unlike some of its more critically panned predecessors (Alien 3,plus bothAlien vs.
So willCovenantbe able to give fans of the original films what theyre hoping for?
According to critics whove screened the film, it appears so.
Gross-outs andgotchas are fun, but they wouldnt amount to much ifCovenantwasnt so thoroughly well-crafted.
Much likeThe Force Awakensdid with the firstStar Wars,Covenantsucceeds by recreating what it feels like to watchAlien.
The tropes it plays with are the ones the original created.
Here, theyre reproduced so slickly that you remember why you fell in love in the first place.
They then face off against an alien life form that threatens their survival.

Kevin P. Sullivan (EW):Covenantis anAlienmovie made for 2017.
It doesnt have the originals restraint or eerie quietness.
Theres probably more footage of the xenomorph in the trailer forCovenantthan in entire 79Alien.
But the update also speeds things up.
The movie understands that the audience knows exactly where the story is going, so it gets there quickly.
Its not going to slow down to give Crewmember #4s demise some (or any) dramatic weight.
But Scott has bigger plans.
The whole series is kind of about this.
ButAlien: Covenantmight be the first to state the theme outright.
That franchise title is, however, looking increasingly wrong.
It is a bit familiar.
The title of the movie has been changed back toAlien, but this is very much aPrometheusmovie.
And if you didnt likePrometheus, theres a good chance you wont likeAlien: Covenanteither.
(In turn, if you did likePrometheus, boy, do I have some good news foryou.)
Whats frustrating is this could have been a pretty stellarAlienmovie.
Where do we come from?
Alonso Duralde (The Wrap):Boiled down to the basics, theAlienmovies are monster movie/slasher movie hybrids.
It provides all the tension and action the mainstream audience could want, along with a good deal more.
