Its calledEverything Is Awful.
Its a book for the times, you know.
So I picked out the stories that made me the grumpy person that I am today.
All of the little moments that added up to my life of depravity.
And I should clarify that theres sarcasm in my voice so everyone is not like, This guy.
I went to journalism school and I feel like Im wasting my degree if I dont write words.
There were weeks when I would say, We dont have to have a perfect script.
Lets just go for it!
And my producer would be like, No.
You know, for a video, Im writing almost for a character.
But for a book, Im writing about myself.
That was me attempting to sound far more profound than I actually am.
Were there any essay collections you used as a model?
Were you looking atDavid Sedarisor anyone like that?Yeah.
David Sedaris, obviously, I love.
I write about Nora Ephron in my intro.
Her mantra was Everything is copy, so myEverything is Awfulis sort of an homage.
I appreciated her ability to pick something super innocuous and write a super personal, funny essay about it.
So I kind of took that to heart and exposed all of my most embarrassing moments.
When I was at BuzzFeed, I sort of became like the boy band reporter.
It started as a joke like, Ha ha, Im this grown man who loves One Direction.
And then it became, like … real.
But its like fishing.
Occasionally youll catch something.
Do you ever run out of stuff to complain about?Surprisingly, I havent.
Living in New York is sort of a constant reminder of humanitys worst behavior.
At one point I asked, What should I complain about next?
and one person likefreakedout that she thought I was trying to get them to write my material for me.
I was like, No.
Just calm down, OK?
Its harder than it looks.
