What if this was always going to be the same?
So this thing is actually going to get made.
Was it already cast at that point?Yes.
By the time I got the call sheet it was cast.
She had such a specific and wonderful vision, and we just had a Vulcan Mind Meld.
What exactly was her vision?
But she really did.
She did these flights of fancy with Maddys imagination, and she really figured it out.
I didnt know how they were going to do the text messages onscreen.
She just made it feel really whimsical.
Tell me about your experience on set.
Which parts did you see filmed?I got to see a couple parts.
My favorite probably is when we got to do a cameo for the in the movie.
So my husband and my little girl and I are in it for two seconds.
Were on the beach in Hawaii.
We go by very quick.
Oh, I need to see it again! Were like splashing in the waves.
She just kept pointing at it and theyre like, Cut!
Dont point at the camera!
They just read the book and they were totally [fine].
Shes sort of innocent, but brave and curious.
And Nick has got this whole charming, sort of self-deprecating thing going on which really fits with Olly.
So yeah, they didnt need me!
What surprised you most about seeing the final product on screen?
Reading the script, I was like, Damn it!
Why didnt I think of that when I was writing the book?
Which is a nice realization to have!
Now there aretwostories about Maddy and Olly.
When I saw it, the thing that stuck out to me the most was the music.
And thats on purpose.
Stella and those guys are geniuses.
I finished it at the beginning of theEverything, Everythingtour.
You know the good and the bad, and I dont necessarily think either thing is good for you.
Because of your temptation, then, is to sort of go with the thing [people like].
If someone really likes a passage, its like, Oh, maybe I should write like that more.
Or if they really hate it, its like, Oh, maybe I should avoid it.
Like, with a passionate intensity.
I read it and it really sort of knocked me over for a couple days.
So then I stopped reading them.
He was totally right.
You have to be able to make the art you want to make.
You obviously want your work to keep getting better and better…I mean, I think its wonderful!
Im used to hearing both the negative and positive.
The trick is not to repeat yourself, right?
Otherwise, Im not growing as an artist, and no one wants to see the same book again.
Im working on book three, and its wildly different from either of those two.
Everything, Everythingis out now
