‘We wanted to keep the video really simple to allow for the emotion to be the focal point,’ the band tells EW

Dragonettes music videos have featured everything fromfreaky lab experimentstocheesy dance routinesin recent years, but the Canadian synth-pop group is skipping the spectacle for the new Sweet Poison clip, premiering online on EW below.

We wanted to keep the video really simple to allow for the emotion to be the focal point, frontwoman Martina Sorbara tells EW over email.

And theres plenty behind the song: The poignant, highly danceable track is from the bands new album,Royal Blues, which is the groups first LP in four years and also the first since Sorbara and husband-bandmate Dan Kurtzannounced their separation.

This song came out of an emotional time for us and the story in the lyrics is very defined: love that you cant hold onto nor let go of, Sorbara writes.

On the set of the video, after the first take, a full run through of the song Dan and I both looked at each other and we could see that we were both holding back tears.

But over all I think it meant a lot to us to share the experience and live the song together in that moment.

Dragonette have already shared two other tracks fromRoyal Blues, out Nov. 11: the anthemic album openerLet the Night Fall, released last year, and this summers bouncyLonely Heart.
